In Finland, anyone who has made an invention which is suspectible of industrial application, or his successor in title, shall be entitled, on application, to a patent and thereby to the exclusive right to exploit the invention commercially. The patent can be a Finnish national patent. Patent protection is also possible by registering a European Patent in Finland, as Finland is a Contracting State of the European Patent Convention since 1996. According to the Finnish Patent Act patents may only be granted for inventions which are new in relation to what was known before the filing date of the patent application and which also differ essentially therefrom. A European Patent has effect in Finland if the applicant or the patent holder has supplied a translation of the patent to the Finnish Patent Office and within the same period has paid the prescribed fee for printing the translation.
