Published 17.6.2009

In a patent agency there is always a need of new capacity – even in a recessive cycle far-sighted businesses invest in product development. Jussi Nervola, M.Sc. Tech, and our newest patent attorney started working with us – and our excellent clients - in the beginning of this summer.

In order to find out what kind of a person the new attorney actually is, we asked Jussi a few questions. Even though very busy, Jussi who is living in Munkkivuori, Helsinki, responded in his characteristic, easy-going way with a glint in his eye.

Q: Name, age and marital status?

A: ”Jussi Nervola, 28 years and bachelor”.

Q: Education?

A: ”A graduate of Munkkiniemen yhteiskoulu in 2000, M.Sc. Tech, the Faculty of Electronics, Communications and Automation at Helsinki University of Technology in 2007. An exchange student at the Technical University of Munich for one semester. In my master thesis I developed the performance of GSM-EDGE networks at Nokia Networks”.

Q: And you carried on with Nokia?

A: ”Certainly, already before my thesis work I worked as a trainee in the system testing of GSM Networks at Nokia Networks. After graduation I moved to the IPR department of Nokia, to work as a patent engineer”.

Q: And what was your IPR job?

A: ”I worked in a team focusing on patenting of various services, e.g. internet, music, location and social network services”.

Q: Your tasks, what exactly did they include?

A: ”For instance collaboration with inventors, evaluation of possibilities to have inventions patented, analyzing office actions and quality evaluation of patent applications”.

Q: Did you enjoy working at Nokia?

A: ”Yes, very much. Especially the international atmosphere and the opportunity to work together with experts in different fields. The Nokia teams, as you know, consist of people from all parts of the globe. And I learned how a big organization operates”.

Q: What else did you learn at Nokia?

A: ”As a patent engineer, I realized how challenging the fast development of ITC technology is in terms of patenting. In new technology, there is always a need of protection in order to enable big investments in R & D”.

Q: Why did you change from Nokia to a patent agency?

A: ”I find patenting very interesting and I wanted to experience it from the patent agency perspective”.

A: ”I find technology and new inventions interesting. I´m fascinated of learning new things – the field of patenting continuously offers challenging assignments”.

Q: And why did you choose Heinänen?

A: ”I´m full of fire, I expect to get even more familiarized with the world of patents. There are quite a lot of challenges, but I have confidence in my ability and motivation. It´s always fascinating to learn new things”.

Q: And you trust there will be enough work?

A: ”I´m sure, businesses have to cover their innovations also in the future. A patent is an effective and indispensable way of protecting your immaterial rights”.

A: “I´m thorough, systematic and rigorous. I consider this to be essential when working with
patents”.
